LANGUAGE ARTS: Writing, Reading, and Word Work (Spelling)
Writing class uses a program called, "Being a Writer" and MAISA UNITS . Students write daily in a journal / notebook. Students publish their writing 5 times per year. These writings are put in the hallway and a "Writer's Celebration" takes place, allowing Sylvester students to share and view others' writing.
Reading class uses a program related to the writing program called, "Making Meaning" and MAISA UNITS. Students are exposed to different kinds (genres) of reading materials. In addition, students are tested (DRA2) to find their comfort levels in books. Classroom libraries are leveled so that students can choose books that are in their comfort levels. Students are tested through the year (DRA2) to check for growth. Reading lessons are given according to the needs of the students. Fluency is focused on to help the students become confident and comprehensive readers.
Word Work consists of lots of "word sorts" (which teach kids about the formation of words), vocabulary exposure, sentence structure practice and phonics. We use a quick test from "Words Their Way" to help determine each students level of phonic understanding. This helps in grouping kids for extra work in their needed areas. "Orton Gillingham" is also used for phonics/vocabulary instruction.
